Africa-Press – Botswana. Government is mooting plans to establish an independent unit that would address tender queries and complaints as part of efforts to fast-track project implementation.

At a kgotla meeting in Makalamabedi on Monday, the Vice President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane, said the objective of the unit would be to ensure seamless project implementation through supervision of those awarded tenders.

On another matter, Mr Tsogwane said the Transitional National Development Plan billed to commence in March had necessitated the establishment of a national planning commission.

The planning commission, he said, would focus on infrastructural development, fiscal sustainability, human capital development and business performance.

On the upgrading of Boteti Sub-district to full district status, Mr Tsogwane stated that the move was intended to bring services closer to the people.

He said the Motopi/Makalamabedi road project would be implemented before end of the year as it was among those at the top of the list for roads scheduled for implementation.

For his part, Makalamabedi Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Jobe Gaborapelwe, had earlier on complained of the bad state of the Motopi/Makalamabedi gravel road, saying it damaged vehicles.

Mr Gaborapelwe also complained about the high costs that farmers had to incur for transporting cattle to Rakops for slaughter.

Furthermore, he also noted that the Government Automated Budgeting System, which was constantly down in Rakops, was a disservice to farmers as it hampered them from procuring eartags for their livestock.

He also complained of shortage of teachers at Baipidi Primary School as well as the lack of adequate accommodation for teachers at the same school.

In response, the chief education officer, Ms Milidzani Nduna, said the Ministry of Basic Education and Skills Development had advertised vacant posts to fill vacancies.

Acting council secretary, Mr Christopher Maramba, said plans were afoot to allow the private sector to construct a slaughter slab in either Motopi or Makalamabedi to address the challenge being experienced where farmers slaughtered their livestock anywhere in violation of the laid-down meat handling laws and processes,he said.
