Africa-Press – Botswana. As the continent prepares for the 38th African Union (AU) Summit scheduled for mid-February in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, efforts to fill the various leadership roles have gathered pace, with eSwatini the latest nation to visit Botswana to campaign for Mr Moses Vilakati’s candidacy.

The Special Envoy of King Mswati III, the Minister of Labour and Social Security Mr Phila Buthelezi met with President Advocate Duma Boko during a courtesy visit at the Office of the President yesterday to seek Botswana’s support and endorsement for Mr Vilakati’s candidature.

A former Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Tourism and Enviromental Affairs, Mr Vilakati is standing for the position of Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment.

The portfolio is one of the six commissioners who together with the chairperson and deputy make up the African Union Commission that heads the continental body’s secretariat in Addis Ababa.

Mr Vilakati told President Boko that in addition to studies at the then University of Swaziland and further studies abroad in California, United States of America, he had three decades of experience in the agricultural sector.

This includes having worked in the country’s successful sugar industry which he said exports 600 000 tonnes of sugar annually, and eventually heading the agricultural sector in the country’s executive.

Presenting Mr Vilataki, the King’s envoy, Mr Buthelezi conveyed the eSwatini monarch’s congratulatory message to President Boko on his election as the sixth President of Botswana.

Mr Buthelezi further delivered a special written message from King Mswati III, and reiterated the two nation’s strong historical bilateral bonds.
