Africa-Press – Botswana. Imagine losing everything in a matter of minutes; your memories, your belongings, and your sense of safety.
This is the harsh reality for a family in Moshupa after a devastating fire engulfed their home during the Presidents olidays. Kanye Fire Brigade and local police are yet to provide a report on the cause of the fire. In an emotional interview recently, Mr Gaofenngwe Mokotedi, the father and family representative, described the harrowing details of that tragic day. He said that the incident occurred while most family members were away from home. At the time of the fire, the only occupants were his mother-in-law and some toddlers.
“We are grateful they made it out without any injuries, especially when you look back at what the home looks like now,” Mr Mokotedi said, reflecting on the narrow escape.
He expressed deep appreciation for outpouring of support from the community. One family, who operates Sims Bed and Breakfast, opened their doors to provide temporary shelter and meals, helping the Mokotedi family during this difficult time. Witnesses present when the fire started reported hearing a loud pop before flames quickly engulfed the house.
“Those who were there acted quickly, managing to get the children to safety just in time,” Mr Mokotedi recounted.
Unfortunately, by the time firefighters arrived from Kanye, the damage was already catastrophic; the entire home consumed by flames with nothing salvageable, he said. Mr Mokotedi described the situation as overwhelming, as the extent of the damage was difficult to quantify due to the total loss.
The only item they managed to save was a car, which they were able to retrieve after breaking down the garage door. As the family grapples with this immense loss, they are calling for community support to help rebuild their lives and restore their sense of security.
