Africa-Press – Botswana. On 11 November 2025, the First Lady of Botswana, Kaone Boko, hosted Ms. Lydia Zigomo, East and Southern Africa Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The meeting focused on identifying collaborative opportunities between the Office of the First Lady and UNFPA to advance reproductive and maternal health across Botswana.

During the discussions, both parties highlighted key areas of intervention, including child marriages, sexual and reproductive health, and adolescent health. These focus areas aim to address critical gaps in healthcare access and improve outcomes for women and young people in the country.

The First Lady emphasized that the collaboration will support ongoing initiatives to expand access to quality healthcare services. She noted that joint efforts with UNFPA will reinforce programs targeting vulnerable populations, especially adolescents, and help reduce risks associated with early marriages and limited reproductive health education.

Ms. Zigomo expressed UNFPA’s commitment to working closely with the First Lady’s office. The partnership will combine resources, expertise, and advocacy efforts to strengthen health systems and empower communities.

This collaboration marks a significant step toward enhancing maternal and reproductive health in Botswana. It reflects a shared commitment to improving healthcare access, protecting adolescent rights, and supporting sustainable development in the region.

Through this partnership, both parties aim to implement practical programs, raise awareness, and create long-term solutions that benefit women, adolescents, and families across the country.
