Africa-Press – Botswana. The Department of Meteorological Services has warned of possible flooding in some parts of Botswana as a result of the heavy rainfalls forecast up to Saturday.
Senior meteorologist, Ms Lulu Dipao told that the country should expect rainfall amounts of between 50mm and 100mm.
As of wedensday, some areas had already recorded around 100mm which resulted in flooding, she said warning that the situation could worsen with more downpours expected.
Ms Dipao explained that an already wet ground could contribute to flooding as it had reached saturation point.
She cautioned the public to be on high alert and take necessary precautions to avoid loss of life and damage to property.
Botswana Police Service Traffic Division officer, Constable Abel Ramakoloi said due to heavy rains in Gaborone, the road between Central Business District and Mass Media Complex was momentarily closed wedensday morning due to the overflowing Segoditshane River.
Segoditshane Road next to Maoka Junior Secondary School was closed around 0400 the same day, he said adding that the bridge situation was under close monitoring.
Constable Ramakoloi said Limpopo Road connecting Glen Valley and Phakalane was also closed briefly. He appealed to members of the public to exercise caution as some parts of it were still under water.
The officer said police were concerned about the number of unaccompanied school-going children, especially primary school learners.
Constable Ramakoloi therefore pleaded with community members, parents and guardians to assist young pupils to cross the road safely.
In Old Naledi, Mafitlhakgosi Restaurant employee Mr Tiroyamodimo Kgari said the early hours of wedensday saw their premises submerged.
With everything in the building soaked in water, business operations were disturbed, he said.
