Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana Football League chairperson says they will soon unveil sponsorship from First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) for the coming season.

Nicholas Zakhem said during a press conference in Gaborone on Tuesday that FNBB sponsorship would not only be a financial boost but would add value and vibe to the league. “They have ideas to improve the game,” he said.

He said the committee was working hard to prepare for the coming new season and was hopeful that everything would be in place by July end.

Zakhem further applauded Jwaneng Galaxy for winning the premier league title and also welcomed Chadibe FC and Jwaneng Young Stars from first division leagues.

He also wished best of luck to three relegated teams; Police IX, Eleven Angeles and Holy Ghost.

Zakhem also said the issue of club licensing was an important aspect that must be fully scrutinised.

Therefore, he said club licensing must not leave any stones unturned to ensure that all the clubs passed the litmus test and were duly licensed.

“The licensing process must scrutinise everything. There is a need for transparency,” he said.

Zakhem said the process of club licensing was somehow compromised in the previous season as some teams experienced challenges in relation to reaching all the licensing requirements.

He said FIFA, Botswana Football Association and Botswana Football League were concerned by situation where a company would sponsor more than one club.

He cited Debswana as such a company since it sponsored Orapa United and Jwaneng Galaxy.

Zakhem said the situation was worrying as it was likely to jeopardise smooth running of the league. In addition, he applauded the media for their support and taking football to the people.

“We were on a flight that was going through a turbulence, but the plane landed safely on Saturday as the league came to a close,” said Zakhem.

However, he called for the media to vigorously advocate for privatisation of football clubs adding that the move was critical for the growth of football.

He said football clubs must turn professional, profitable and benefit all players, adding such was possible if they were operating as private companies.
