Africa-Press – Botswana. Gaborone City Council is expected to host Västerås delegation in January 2024 in a bid to broaden capacity-building in sustainable consumption and waste management.

Västerås is a city in central Sweden on the shore of Lake Mälaren in the province of Västmanland, 100 kilometres west of Stockholm.

Opening the full Gaborone City Council meeting recently, Mayor Austin Abraham said the three-year project was to address the seemingly apparent disconnect on waste management matters between the City Council and the community.

Mr Abraham said the emphasis was on information sharing, engagement of the minority groups and political leadership capacity on the solid waste management agenda.

In that regard, he said one project delivery mode was through exchange visits where knowledge is shared among the participating municipalities.

In other issues, the mayor said the construction of a rehabilitation centre in Gaborone’s Block 8 was progressing well while the brickwork had commenced.

He said the project, funded by Debswana, De Beers and the Diamond Trading Company Botswana to the tune of P8.5 million, was expected to be completed in March 2024.

The mayor said the facility was a one-stop shop comprised of various components and was expected to address various needs of People Living with Disabilities who had not been adequately provided for in the past.

He said the city council was paving some roads with interlocking bricks through the Community Constituency Programme.

He further said some major roads within the city were in a terrible condition and required significant rehabilitation that would cost over P555 million.

Mr Radisego also said most bituminous roads had outlived their design life, hence the prevalence of potholes in the city.

He further said tenders for pothole patching in the city were recently awarded and the signing of contracts would be expedited so that contractors could assume sites by December.
