Africa-Press – Botswana. The GM Soccer Fiesta tournament which is now on its fourth year is slowly positioning the mining town of Jwaneng as a sport tourism hub.
This was said by by the Minister of sport and arts Jacob Kelebeng when officiating at the games, which attracted a large crowd in Jwaneng on Saturday.
The minister said apart from showcasing talent, the tournament fostered community development and promoted social cohesion.
Kelebeng noted that the participation of international clubs in that tournament was a clear testament to the potential of the said event.
This year, there were two international clubs from Lesotho and Zambia and the Ramotswa based first division side Dinare FC as well as the defending champions Jwaneng Galaxy.
The Jwaneng mine General manager Goitseone Gadifele said that the proceeds from the tournament would be used to construct a health facility at Betesankwe settlement. He said they saw it fitting to donate such a facility to the area since Betesankwe community was still being serviced by a mobile clinic. Fabian Kayuli, the country manager of Barloworld equipment Botswana which was the main sponsor of the event said, his company was committed to community development. He too echoed the same sentiments as Minister Kelebeng that the occasion solidifies communities and help grow local businesses.
Meanwhile both Jwaneng Galaxy teams for both men and women managed to defend their titles and were rewarded with medals and P40 000.00 each while Bantu FC from Lesotho and their female counterparts settled for silver medals and P30,000.00 each.
The Ramotswa based first division outfit Dinare FC scooped position three and walked away with P20,000.00 while Zambian team Viva Dynamos settled for position four and got P10,000.
