Africa-Press – Botswana. The Government is committed to ensuring that Botswana is transformed to a high income economy by the year 2036 and for this reason there is need for a rigorous implementation of the Reset and Reclaim Agenda as well as the Transitional National Development Plan, these being initiatives designed to drive the nation towards the National Vision 2036 aspirations.

National Security Advisor to the President, Mr Jacson Madzima said this at the official closure of the Prison Management Induction course at Mahalapye Staff College Friday after 17 newly recruited professionals into the Botswana Prisons Service completed their six weeks training in Prison Management induction programme.

Mr Madzima said Botswana Prisons Service (BPS) is one of the organisations at the forefront in the implementation of the government agenda, particularly number 5 on Mindset Change.

He implored graduates to commit to upholding fair and humane treatment of offenders, whilst ensuring respect for their human rights and dignity.

He commended BPS commissioner, Ms Dinah Marathe for her visionary leadership, applauding the roadmap she introduced, which serves as a blueprint through which she defines the direction that the prisons service is taking.

He added that 150 posts have been approved in the 2023/24 financial year, which include the 17 professional posts to which the graduates have been appointed to fill, and additional 150 will be approved in the coming financial year. The move he said, is despite government decision to downsize the public service, as the authorities can see the plan and passion that the commissioner has for transforming the institution to a model of correctional excellence.

For her part, Ms Marathe explained that the programme was geared towards familiarising the officers with the mandate and functions of the prisons service, introducing them to Botswana Laws, especially the Prisons Act, creating an understanding of the public service, government reforms as well as establishing a high performance culture.

She mentioned that the training was in two folds including both theory in prison management and administration as well as practical training, which included drill and the use of firearms.
