Africa-Press – Botswana. The Minister of Communications and Innovation, Mr David Tshere says the newly established electric vehicle factory is owned by a private entity which the government has rented for the assembly of electric vehicles.

Responding to a question in Parliament, Mr Tshere provided detailed information about the initiative, explaining that the Botswana Institute of Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) procured vehicles following The Presidential Directive CAB 5EX0/2024.

The fleet comprises 33 buses and 20 SUVs, specifically designated for this project. BITRI operates under the Ministry of Communications and Innovation, which oversees the management of the e-Mobility Project.

Mr Tshere’s remarks were in response to MP for Shashe West Mr Jeremiah Frenzel’s question, in which he inquired whether the factory was government-owned and also sought clarification on the procurement responsibilities for vehicle parts and the total count of vehicles, including buses, bakkies, and sedans.

The discussion reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to advancing electric mobility in Botswana, as it seeks to innovate and modernize the nation’s transportation sector.
