Africa-Press – Botswana. The Minister for State President, Mr Moeti Mohwasa has promised the four displaced households due to recent hailstorm that government will assist them after assessment.
Mr Mohwasa said this following a visit to the victim’s households in Francistown on November 25 and was accompanied by the Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship and MP for Francistown east, Mr Tiroeaone Ntsima and Minister of Environment and Tourism and MP for Francistown south, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi.
The displaced families have been temporarily relocated to a private centre where they are being assisted with food and other amenities.
He explained that government saw it fit to visit the affected families to get first hand information and map the way forward.
The minister expressed gratitude that nobody lost their lives during the hailstorm, which left a trail of destruction and damages to property, especially the gazebos for the informal sector.
The delegation visited affected areas including homes in Kgapamadi award, Area W and Somerset east as well as Setlalekgosi Junior Secondary School, where they were informed by the school head, Mr Lawrence Seitiso that the school had been without electricity since the day of the hailstorm.
One of the victims, Ms Gofaone Sepikili of Kgapamadi ward reported that her home was severely damaged, leaving her homeless after the strong winds ripped off her roof.
Another resident from Kgapamadi ward, Ms Evelyn Kajane said she had been without power since November 25 as her house was soaked in water.
The hailstorm also left Ms Gracious Ginger of Area W, without power, her home flooded, and the storm damaged her screen wall and exterior render.
Meanwhile, a social worker, Ms Bogadi Chose reported that the hailstorm victims temporarily housed at the centre were receiving good care.
She said while many could had lost their belongings and food, the children’s school uniform were spared as they were at school when the storm hit.
MP Mmolotsi encouraged the victims to return home if they wished, assuring them of government assistance with any necessary relocation.
