Govt Plans BERA Revitalisation

Africa-Press – Botswana. Acting President Ndaba Gaolathe has emphasised the energy sector’s crucial role in driving economic growth and job creation, particularly for young people.

It is against this background that government is planning revitalisation of the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) as a key priority for the new government.

This revitalisation, Mr Gaolathe explained, was essential for the sector to contribute meaningfully to Botswana’s economy.

Responding to questions during a kgotla meeting in Tonota Saturday, he highlighted BERA’s need to strengthen its capabilities.

The government, he stated, viewed the energy sector as a vital engine for economic development and that it aimed to significantly increase youth participation in efforts to combat unemployment.

This followed a complaint by Tonota businessman, Mr Tebogo Nametsegang, who detailed significant bottlenecks within the energy sector.

Mr Nametsegang, operating in the oil industry, described a monopolistic environment where a single entity controlled a disproportionate number of filling stations, hindering fair competition.

He cited the recent retrenchment of 28 employees due to the unsustainable financial pressures created by these market inefficiencies and industry malpractice.

Member of Parliament for Tonota, Mr Gaefele Sedombo, expressed gratitude for the government’s commitment to community consultation through kgotla meetings, saying they were vital for a functional democracy.

He pledged the support of Tonota community for government’s initiatives.
