Africa-Press – Botswana. Government will prioritise policies focused on environmental protection, climate change mitigation and sustainable resource management to protect the country’s natural environment.

Delivering the State-of-the-Nation Address on Tuesday, President Advocate Duma Boko said Botswana was blessed and its natural environment was one of its most valuable assets that must be protected.

To achieve this, President Boko said the following initiatives would be implemented; a comprehensive National Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, renewable energy initiatives and conservation of natural resources.

The ESG strategy, he said would emphasise green finance and position the country as a leader in climate action and also attract international capital to essential sectors, such as renewable energy, waste management and conservation.

To reduce reliance on fossil fuels and create new economic opportunities for Batswana, the President said government would invest in renewable energy projects such as solar, wind and bioenergy.

Additionally, he said efforts to protect Botswana’s unique wildlife and ecosystems would be expanded to ensure that the country’s natural reserves remained pristine for generations to come.

“Eco-tourism will play a vital role in both preserving our environment and generating sustainable income for local communities,” he added.
