Africa-Press – Botswana. The Zac Construction Cream of Gaborone Ladies Tournament concluded in thrilling fashion as Gaborone United Ladies drubbed Security Systems Ladies 5-1 in the final, capping off an impressive run.

Gaborone United had earlier outclassed Township Rollers Ladies 4-1 in the semi-finals, securing their spot in the championship match.

Security Systems, who defeated BDF XI Ladies 5-2 in the other semi-final, put up a spirited fight but were ultimately no match for the dominant United side.

GU Ladies earn top honours

Amogelang Sebotho of Gaborone United was named Player of the Tournament while her teammate Nancy Baeletsi claimed the Top Goal Scorer accolade for her four goals.

The Manager of Gaborone United Ladies, Owe Mmolawa, who also served as the tournament coordinator, expressed his delight at the team’s success and the overall success of the tournament.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the team,” Mmolawa said. “The ladies displayed incredible heart, determination and teamwork throughout the tournament. They faced strong competition but their hard work paid off in the end.”

He extended his gratitude to all the teams that participated and acknowledged the high level of football that was on display.

“I would like to thank all the teams for making this tournament such a success,” he said. “The quality of football we witnessed was fantastic, and it shows the depth of talent we have in Botswana women’s football.”

Significantly, Mmolawa took the opportunity to express his appreciation to the tournament sponsors, Zac Construction, whose support was crucial in making the competition a reality.

Invaluable

“We are extremely grateful to Zac Construction for sponsoring this tournament,” he stated.

“Their support has been invaluable, and they’ve made a big contribution to the development of women’s football in Botswana. We look forward to continuing this partnership in the future.”

Mmolawa also thanked the fans who turned out in large numbers to support the tournament. “The atmosphere was electric, and it’s thanks to the supporters who came out in full force,” he noted. “Their energy helped push the players to give their best on the field.”

National team

The Zac Construction Cream of Gaborone Tournament also served as a platform for several players to earn national recognition.

Several players of Gaborone United Ladies team have been called up to the Mares camp, which is preparing for the 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship, that is scheduled for 22 October to 2 November in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Among the players selected are Tlamelo Pheresi, Gonayamodimo Macha, Kesegofetse Mochawe, Laone Moloi, Golebaone Selebatso, and top scorer Baeletsi. Jessica Maponga and Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse were also selected.

Mmolawa congratulated the players on their selection for the national team. “We’re especially proud of the players who’ve earned a place in the national camp,” he said.

“It’s a huge achievement, and we have full confidence that they will represent Botswana with pride.”
