Africa-Press – Botswana. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said on Tuesday that “the world has lost an imposing global leader, committed multilateralist and tireless champion of peace” with the death of the last president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev.
” I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mikhail Gorbachev, a unique statesman who changed the course of history. He did more than any other individual to bring about a peaceful end to the Cold War,” said the Portuguese diplomat, quoted in a press release.
For the United Nations official, the “world has lost an imposing global leader, committed multilateralist and tireless defender of peace”.
António Guterres, who expressed his condolences on behalf of the UN “to the family, people and government of the Russian Federation”, recalled Gorbachev’s words when he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 and noted that “peace is not unity in similarity, but unity in diversity”.
“[Gorbachev] has put this vital vision into practice by following the path of negotiation, reform, transparency and disarmament,” he said.
The UN leader also mentioned that in recent years the former leader of the USSR “has embraced a new challenge” important for the well-being of humanity, by founding Green Cross International, to “create a sustainable future by cultivating harmonious relationships between human beings humans and the environment”.
Former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev died on Tuesday at the age of 91, Russian news agencies said.
