Mr Keorapetse who gave the speech on behalf of President Advocate Duma Boko at the Sir Seretse Khama Day Commemoration in Gaborone yesterday, explained that such traditions allowed societies to cherish their heritage and drew meaningful lessons from the past.

Building on this, he stressed the importance of remembering Sir Seretse’s remarkable legacy.

His unwavering commitment to nation building, advocacy for social justice and dedication to the progress of Botswana remains a beacon of inspiration for generations to come, he said.

He therefore, credited Sir Seretse’s administration for having ensured the laying of a foundation of a state that was eager to foster development and subscribe to the principle of good governance.

This also include uniting diverse ethnic groups and political formations under the banner of a single and united nation.

He added that honouring such contributions was vital not only to celebrate history but also to motivate future action.

The Speaker underscored the significance of collective memory in shaping the future, asserting, ‘we learn from their mistakes and triumphs, drawing strength from their examples. This is not merely about celebrating the past; it is about forging a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.’

He said as the country grappled with challenges, it was important to reflect on the ideals of Sir Seretse, which included Democracy, Peace, Human Rights, Good Governance and Development as well as

Nation Building to guide the nation’s journey toward progress.

Transitioning to a regional and global perspective, Mr Keorapetse said leaders like Sir Seretse had played pivotal roles beyond Botswana’s borders.

“Their stories serve as enduring testaments to the resilience of the human spirit and offer valuable lessons for addressing today’s challenges, from economic development to social harmony,” he said.

In his introductory remarks, Minister for State President, Mr Moeti Mohwasa, described the celebrations as a reminder of Sir Seretse’s wisdom, leadership and vision that transformed Botswana from a poor country into a middle-income nation.

He stressed that the day celebrated the former president’s achievements and the enduring fight for a multiparty democracy.

Minister Mohwasa expressed his belief in the importance of free expression and the need to appreciate each other’s differences, regardless of political affiliations for the nation’s unity and progress.

Representing the Khama family, former president Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama paid tribute to Sir Seretse’s commitment to justice, equality, unity and freedom.

He highlighted that Sir Seretse’s marriage to Ruth was a powerful symbol of defiance against racial discrimination and a beacon of inclusivity.

Today, he said, the world faced multiple challenges such as economic, political and environmental tssues that could only be addressed through collaboration guided by integrity and vision.

Assistant Minister for State President, Ms Maipelo Mophuting, reflected on Botswana’s foundation, adding that Sir Seretse understood that genuine leadership was stewardship rooted in enduring values.

She highlighted that his dignity, wisdom and grace demonstrated that leadership was about collective progress, even at personal cost during turbulent times.

Ms Mophuting quoted his powerful words: ‘unity in Botswana will not be achieved by legislation, but by consultation and consensus,’ reminding Batswana that unity must be cultivated through mutual understanding and shared purpose.
