Africa-Press – Botswana. Government continue to support education ministry to ensure that academic performance improves across all levels.

This was said by Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Ms Nnaniki Makwinja on behalf of the Vice President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane at an occasion to celebrate Madisakwana Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) victory celebration in Tonota Friday.

The school got a 95.5 per cent pass rate with 33 As, 20 Bs, 11Cs and 4Ds, making it the overall best primary school in the Tonota PSLE region.

She said currently, Botswana was making strides towards digitisation, science and technology developments, as well as high impact education towards economic developments.

The assistant minister explained that the recent global innovation rankings published annually by the World Intellectual Property Organisation, the Global Innovation Index (GII) ranked countries based on their Innovation capabilities and outcomes.

Ms Makwinja indicated that Africa continued to make significant strides in the GII climbing the ladder in the Global Innovation Race.

She said her ministry was currently in the process of equipping all schools with ICT equipment for both learners and teachers to meet the demands of e-learning era.

Ms Makwinja said while government did not have enough resources to provide these equitably to all the schools, national partners and stakeholders had also acceded to pleas and had stepped up their efforts in assisting with ICT equipment.

To this end, she said government of South Korea has donated 50 tablets that would go a long way in improving virtual for learners. “This gesture is a breakthrough for e-learning,” she said.

She further said laptops had been delivered to senior secondary schools across the country as phase one of the digitilisation programme.

Ms Makwinja said this was government’s target to change the education system into a digital based environment.

“Phase two of this milestone will soon commence where laptops and tablets will be issued to junior secondary schools,” noted Ms Makwinja.

She also said there had been an achievement in the rolling out of internet connectivity to all villages in the country as facilitated by the “Smart Botswana programme” which was a WIFI connectivity project.

She therefore said WIFI internet had been installed in public facilities such as schools, clinics, and kgotla.

Meanwhile Ms Makwinja praised Madisakwana Primary school for producing some of the country’s best students who were doing well in the workplace.

For instance, she cited that some of Madisakwana primary school products were working for the country’s high commission missions abroad and in international organisation while some of them occupied high position both in government and private sector, a testimony that she said the school formed a firm foundation for graduates in the work force.

However, she cautioned the class of 2022 to be ambassadors of their school by performing exceptionally well at their secondary education.

“Do not smoke, drink alcohol or indulge in any other unbecoming behaviour,”she warned the students. The assistant minister was worried that indiscipline amongst learners was increasing at an alarming rate.

She therefore, applauded all those who played a role in achieving the 95 percent ABC pass rate in the class of 2022.

Giving an overview of the results, the school head, Ms Gomotsang Mosweswe said Madisakwana primary had been a motivation to other primary schools in the Tonota region since 2017.

She said in 2017, the school attained a pass rate of 98.4 per cent, 95.23 percent in 2018, 100 percent in 2019, 95.5 per cent in 2020, 91.8 per cent in 2021 whilst it got 95.5 per cent last year.

Ms Mosweswe further attributed the good results to cordial working relationship between parents, the school management and various stakeholders.

In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Bokamoso Radipitse of Tonota commended Madisakwana primary school for being the best school in PSLE results all these years.

He therefore, appealed to other schools to emulate the school to improve on their results and further appealed to parents to play a role in the education of their children.
