Influenza - Like Illness Surges in Tsabong District

Africa-Press – Botswana. Tsabong District is reported to be experiencing a significant increase in cases of Influenza-like Illness across all facilities in the district.

This surge, which has been confirmed by the disctrict council through its Primary Health Care services, coincides with the onset of winter season a period known for higher respiratory infections due to cold temperatures and increased indoor activity.

In an interview, the Chief Nursing Officer Ms Margaret Ontiretse said the surveillance data from epidemiological weeks 20, 21, and 22 revealed a concerning upward trend in reported cases. She revealed that a cumulative total of 1 478 cases had been recorded over the three-week period, with 396, 483, and 599 cases reported respectively in each week.

Ms Ontiretse highlighted the common symptoms of influenza-like illness, which include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, fatigue, and sometimes chills. She reassured the public that most cases were mild. In light of the escalating numbers, the public is encouraged to adopt preventative measures to reduce transmission.

She recommended precautions including practicing regular handwashing with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitisers, avoiding close contact with individuals showing flu-like symptoms, covering one’s mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, phones, and countertops, and wearing a face mask when in crowded or enclosed public areas. The Tsabong District Council is actively monitoring the situation and working with health facilities to ensure an appropriate response and care for those affected she said.

“We urge community members to remain vigilant, seek medical attention when symptoms appear and continue to adhere to public health guidance. Together, we can minimise the spread of influenza-like illness,” said Ms Ontiretse.
