Africa-Press – Botswana. Prison officers have been encouraged to come up with initiatives that could develop the service.

Addressing prison officers in Letlhakane on Tuesday, Botswana Prison Services Deputy Commissioner Dikakanyo Mmolawa said the main objective officers were doing their mandate professionally.

Deputy Commissioner Mmolawa encouraged officers to work in a smart way so that they could assist customers.

He also said prisons were not meant to work in isolation but were part of the government system. He said the recent prison leadership conference noted that prisoners were not encouraged to participate in rehabilitation programmes.

He said Letlhakane Prisons had 78 recordings and that 25 engaged in educational programmes.

Literacy, he said, was high in the institution, an indication that prisoners were encouraged to learn.

He added that education and agriculture were critical areas that they encouraged their customers to take part in.

He commended Letlhakane Prison for being innovate although small with not many rehabilitation programmes.

He also said the Letlhakane Prison reintegration committee was the best in the country and urged officers to visit the committee and learn from them.

Deputy Commissioner Mmolawa said in the 2023/24 financial year every station would be given a target to achieve with regard to rehabilitation.

He also urged prison officers to intensify training on food production so that they could feed from their produce, adding that they were mandated to feed prisoners vegetables.

He urged prisoners to accept their situation and to seek counselling.
