Africa-Press – Botswana. Members of Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA) have been urged to collaborate and work closely with one another to quash security threats in the continent.
Minister for State President, Mr Kabo Morwaeng said imported threats were more difficult to deal with than internal ones, hence the need to collaborate.
Officially closing the CISSA conference on Friday, Mr Morwaeng viewed the conference as successful and memorable.
He said the conferring of the CISSA chairmanship on Botswana through the Director General of the Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services, Brigadier Peter Magosi was another key milestone of the conference.
Minister Morwaeng said taking over the chairmanship was a serious challenge for both the country and Brigadier Magosi.
As Brigadier Magosi celebrates ascending to the CISSA chair, he must be mindful that the country and CISSA have high expectations on him, he said.
He assured Brigadier Magosi that with the support of CISSA membership he would surely thrive in his assignment.
“We can assure you of our government’s full support to see to it that you serve your community very well,” he said.
Minister Morwaeng stated that the theme of the conference; Food Security, Conflict and Peace in Africa was critically relevant for the current winds sweeping across the continent.
The prevalence of conflicts in Afrcia, he said, no matter how small in magnitude, could taint the development agenda and therefore urged intelligence officers to make sure that Africa was safe for all its people in all spheres including in food security.
He said if food security was not attained, Africa would remain a haven of discontent and ultimately conflict, noting that a hungry man was an angry man.
Africa has the best soils and abundance of agricultural land, he said, adding that it was unfortunate that Africa was still dependent on other continents for food.
Mr Morwaeng pointed out that it appeared as if most of the resources in Africa were diverted towards fighting instability.
He also urged CISSA members to commit to and implement resolutions of their deliberations, as by so doing CISSA would be contributing towards solutions for a better and sustainable Africa.
Meanwhile, the incoming chairperson of CISSA, Brigadier Magosi indicated that the conference was a success as a result of the contributions of all attendants from intelligence and security agents of the different African nations.
He emphasised that Africa was currently faced with increasing challenges that threaten peace, security and food production.
Brigadier Magosi said the conference came up with resolutions on how to deal with food insecurity and it was imperative that they worked together and embrace contingency measures to fight challenges.
Brigadier Magosi reminded the conference to always remember that a security threat to one was a threat to all.
He indicated that in accepting the chairmanship, he pledged to serve with commitment and due diligence.
