Africa-Press – Botswana. International trips undertaken by President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi are necessary for international relations and development of the country.
“Dr Masisi attracts investors to the country, sometimes the international community wants to meet the President, not me as the Minister of Foreign Affairs hence unavoidable trips,” Member of Parliament for Kanye South, Dr Lemogang Kwape stated during kgotla meetings in Selokolela and Sesung on Wednesday.
Dr Kwape said Batswana should not be misled by those discrediting the importance of such trips saying, they were for the good of the country and it was where strong ties were formed between Botswana and the international community.
He explained that Botswana traded with different countries and for such to be successful there should be strong ties, which were formed during such trips.
“These travels create opportunities for Batswana in the international market, such as jobs and scholarships,” Dr Kwape said. Meanwhile, Dr Kwape pleaded with his constituents to mould their children into responsible beings from a tender age as failure to do so might lead to poor school results and eventually crime.
He said he was equally concerned about the bad state of Selokolela-Gasita road, informing residents that plans were in place for regular grading and gravelling where necessary.
Dr Kwape urged Selokolela residents to speed up the process of registering a trust as it was the right platform to generate revenue for the village.
“We should not rely on government for everything. Where we have the capacity to do something for ourselves, it is important to take advantage of that,” he said.
Dr Kwape advised residents against vandalising and stealing of government property saying more funds would be needed to replace such. “Those funds could be used for other developmental projects rather than investing on something for the second time,” he said.
Pertaining to stock theft, Dr Kwape said government would soon introduce stock theft unit and encouraged residents to inform the police of any suspicious activities.
Selokolela Village Development Committee chairperson, Ms Mmamotlalepula Suping had earlier during the meeting, raised a concern about the bad state of Selokolela–Gasita road and requested for regular maintenance.
She also said allocation of plots was slow and pleaded with Dr Kwape to assist in speeding up the process as well as construction of classrooms and teachers’ houses.
