Africa-Press – Botswana. The Assistant Minister for State President who is also Gaborone Bonnington North MP, Ms Maipelo Mophuting has been elected to the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians at the ongoing Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

A press release from the National Assembly says the elections were conducted on Tuesday to replace representatives whose term of office came to an end in March 2025.

It says the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians ensures that issues affecting women form part of the IPU’s priorities. “It organises the work of the forum of women Parliamentarians.”

The forum meets twice a year at the IPU’s assembly held in April and October. The bureau also works to make the IPU aware of gender issues by developing a sustained programme on women issues and to promote greater participation of Members of Parliament in all its senior positions.

Ms Mophuting is currently in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for the 150th IPU assembly and related meetings.
