Africa-Press – Botswana. Messrs Allen Jacobs and Slumber Mokgosi are at the helm of Kweneng District Council (KDC) as council chairperson and deputy respectively.

The two assumed responsibilities for the new district which comprises both Molepolole North and South constituencies as well as part of Lentsweletau constituency after they were elected on Tuesday. The district is now made up of 25 elected and six nominated councillors.

Accepting his new role, Mr Jacobs of Boribamo East ward under Molepolole North constituency said he was grateful for the trust bestowed upon him by his peers to lead the council.

“I consider the trust you have placed in me as sacred and assure you to do my utmost in executing my duties.”

He said together with his deputy, they intended to take KDC to greater heights.

He nonetheless stressed that with the establishment of new districts, it would not be business as usual as communities had high expectations with regard service delivery.

“The next few months will be hectic for us as we review past challenges and develop more robust strategies,” he said. He outlined three key areas as his priorities, among them maintaining impartiality to ensure equal treatment of all councillors.

He vowed to act in a patriotic manner in negotiations and debate, as well as to respect the opinions of others.

Councillor Jacobs takes over from councillor Motlhophi Leo of Loologa ward in Molepolole South constituency.

For their part, KDC councillors commended the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for the establishment of fully fledged councils for better service delivery.

Councillor for Magokotswane ward in Molepolole North constituency Mr Andrew Selwe said the establishment of new councils meant that they would have their own budget as compared to previously where they had to share it with other councils.

He also said the new development would improve service delivery and implementation of projects. Other associated costs such as travelling expenses would be reduced.

Bonewamang ward councillor under Molepolole South Mr Kabelo Selome said the former district council was too wide covering many villages.

That on its own, he said, hampered service delivery and stifled other villages of developments.

With the new development, he said communities should now expect developments in their localities since the district council would have its own budget.

The district council name remains unchanged.
