Africa-Press – Botswana. Music, as a form of art, plays a vital role in the society and needs to be promoted among learners since it can influence career decisions.
Therefore, donating musical instruments to schools can help in cultivating different musical skills among learners. Speaking at a musical instruments donation ceremony in Shakawe on Monday, Seronga/Gunotsoga Councillor, Mr Boipuso Mangurunga said the musical instruments that were donated in 2022 had produced notable results among the learners.
The musical instruments were donated to Kathiana Primary School by the International Music Exchange for Children (AIMEC), a Non-Governmental Organisation of Japan.
“The pupils have been taught how to play the instruments, which is a positive development for the school and community,” he said.
Mr Mangurunga said the pupils would therefore be able to develop their artistic talents, which would benefit them in future.
The donation was made possible by Botswana’s former Ambassador to Japan Mr Nkoloi Nkoloi, who made the arrangement for AIMEC to donate to children in Botswana during his tenure.
AIMEC Chairperson Mr Kosuke Iwai said the organisation aimed to develop music talent in children.
Music, he said was an international language, which also promoted healing and helped people to overcome troubles.
He said the organisation would continue to support music education in Botswana.
In her welcome remarks, the school head Ms Phetso Ditshimologo said the school, which was opened in 2001 currently had 963 pupils and 33 teachers.
She said that the school performed well in Primary School Leaving Examinations in the past five years with 87.3 per cent pass rate in 2023.
She said the musical instruments donation had helped to unearth talent among learners, adding that the school had established a music club.
Ms Ditshimologo said she hoped for continued mutual relationship and collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Japanese. The donation included keyboards, guitars and flutes.
