Kanye College of Nursing staff go for months without salaries

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Botswana Nurses Union (BONU) has expressed concern about the treatment of their members (Nurse Lecturers) and other staff members at Kanye College of Nursing, citing failure to pay salaries since September 2023 despite continuous engagement with the management of the college.

“The college has also failed to honor the salary increment agreement for the financial year 2022/23/24. Failure to pay wages can be a violation of state law and employer rights. The employer shall be deemed to be in breach of a contract of employment if he fails to pay basic pay or wage in accordance with Part VII of the Employment Act Cap 47:01 (Section 21(1)),” the Union said.

BONU stated that it has, on several occasions, met with the College, and a settlement agreement was entered into between the employer party and union party. However, nothing has been done so far, indicating a lack of respect by the college management.

The college management should remember that failure to honor an employment contract or collective labor agreement signed by both parties at Kanye Labour office on the 23/11/23 (where the College was to pay by 01/12/23) is an offense liable to penalties as prescribed by the Employment Act.

“As BONU, we shall not rest until our members are paid and believe the college will pay before the end of January 2024. Failure to pay shall leave us with no option but to seek legal intervention to force the college to pay. We assure our members that this impasse shall be dealt with accordingly and hope the college management shall come to its senses and stop violation of employment contracts of employees,” the Union said.
