Africa-Press – Botswana. The Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) Service Centre serving the areas of Kanye, Moshupa, and Jwaneng, has successfully achieved a six per cent reduction in outstanding debt since the implementation of a Debt Amnesty initiative that began in April and ran until June 2025.
Initially, the total debt amounted to P64 million, but it has now decreased to approximately P58 million, thanks to the collection of owed amounts from domestic customers, businesses, and government departments. In an interview recently, Mr Monametsi Ramosu, General Manager of WUC in Kanye, stated that they were still in the process of analyzing the statistics to evaluate the specific contributions of different customer groups towards the overall debt reduction.
Mr Ramosu noted, however, that there had been a lower than expected turnout of clients taking advantage of the debt amnesty program noting that an increase in customer turnout was observed during the last week of June 2025. In light of this positive trend, WUC has decided to extend the debt amnesty program until July 18, aiming to provide further assistance to customers and facilitate a larger reduction of outstanding debts.
He urged all Batswana to seize this opportunity to settle their outstanding arrears with WUC to prevent further complications in their accounts. In addition to debt recovery efforts, Mr Ramosu shared updates about WUC’s ongoing projects in Kanye. The organisation was actively connecting residents to a newly completed network as part of the phase one project undertaken by Estate Construction Company.
This project involved enhancing the underground water network through the replacement of old, small, and leaking pipes. The process also entailed migrating some of their long-standing clients from outdated connections to the new underground pipeline system. Mr Ramosu called on customers to inform his office if there were any individuals who have been overlooked in the connection process to ensure everyone was adequately serviced.
