Africa-Press – Botswana. Bakwena converged at different dikgotla on Saturday, to celebrate Botswana’s 57 year anniversary.
Speaking at the celebrations in Molepolole, Kgosi Kgari III paid tribute to the founding fathers saying, it was through them that the country enjoyed peace, stability and economic growth since independence.
At independence, Botswana was among the world’s poorest countries, ravaged by severe drought, with little prospects for prosperity.
Kgosi Kgari said under the leadership of Sir Seretse Khama, the country managed to stay afloat and eventually over the years, reached a middle income status.
Now under the Presidency of Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi and through the Mindset Change initiative, the country desires a high income status. Kgosi Kgari said steps were taken at independence, to educate Batswana so that they could help develop the country, thus leading to the development of health sector and other infrastructure.
Botswana’s future was bleak at independence due to disease outbreaks and shortage of food but the leadership would to tire to devise effective solutions.
Perhaps the country’s dark moment was when HIV and AIDS ravaged and Kgosi Kgari said former president, Mr Festus Mogae fought to save the lives of his people by availing antiretroviral drugs. Kgosi Kgari urged the nation to embrace mindset change, to prosper and play a meaningful role in Botswana’s economy.
At the same venue, pastors from different congregations prayed for the nation and encouraged all to thank God for the peace and stability the country enjoyed.
The prayers were organised by the Minister’s Fraternal.
Elsewhere, Bakwena celebrated in their own dikgotla. Molepolole South MP, Mr Kabo Morwaeng provided food to all dikgotla in his constituency while Molepolole North MP, Mr Oabile Regoeng urged residents to jealously guard the country’s tranquility for the benefit of future generations.
