Africa-Press – Botswana. As part of efforts to combat climate change, KGK Diamonds has donated 50 fruit trees to Ledumadumane Junior Secondary School in commemoration of World Environment Day.
Speaking to the school community, KGK Diamonds business development manager, Mr Siddarth Gothi underscored the alarming rate of global warming, noting that it affected 80 per cent of the world’s land mass and over 7 billion people.
“Donation of the fruit trees is a tangible step toward environmental stewardship and a proactive effort in addressing climate change and promoting sustainability,” he said.
He said that escalating levels of carbon emissions was a serious threat to ecosystems and demanded urgent action.
“These trees represent life for our environment. They offer nutrition and can even serve as a source of income,” he added, calling on everyone to join the fight to protect the environment.
Mr Gothi also shared their vision of planting hundreds of trees across Botswana annually to mark World Environment Day.
“We will be visiting different areas across the country to continue planting more trees,” he affirmed.
The fruit trees donated included the China apple tree and orange trees.
Mr Unopa Moshabi, Agriculture teacher and coordinator of the Orchard Establishment Project at Ledumadumane, said the donation offered invaluable support for hands-on learning in subjects such as orchard and fruit tree management.
“YouTube videos and textbooks are not ideal for teaching these topics. The best lessons are practical, hands-on experiences,” said Mr Moshabi.
He noted that with the donated trees, students would be able to practice techniques such as layering, budding, and grafting, real-world methods of propagating fruit trees.
“In the end, when the plants bear fruit, students will be truly impressed,” he concluded.
