Africa-Press – Botswana. Kgosi Joseph Mwezi has been ordained as the headman of arbitration for Mabele village in the Chobe District, following the retirement of Kgosi Mbanga Murunda in 2022.

Speaking during the coronation of Kgosi Mwezi, Kgosi Liswaani Maiba Sinvula III of Kavimba explained that Mabele kgotla was currently headed by headman of arbitration who reported to Basubiya Kgosikgolo.

He said as per the Veekuhane (Basubiya) culture they referred to headman of arbitration as dikgosi even though they reported to the paramount Kgosi of the tribe.

Kgosi Sinvula advised Kgosi Mwezi to be neutral and noted “leading people in truth and dignity is a value we should always pursue and I encourage you to build and unite your people.”

He urged Kgosi Mwezi to convene kgotla meetings where issues that could help the village to move forward could be discussed.

Kgosi Sinvula said it was important for dikgosi to work with government, for them to understand the policies and laws that governed the country including Bogosi.

Most importantly Kgosi Sinvula implored the new leader to stay away from politics and be a visionary leader who safeguarded the culture and norms of Mabele.

Kgosi Mwezi’s uncle , Mr Josephat Mwezi advised his nephew treated his people equally and be welcoming of divergent views.

“Be a respectful leader who doesn’t hold grudges against anyone but treats your people equally then, you will become a dignified and impactful leader.”

For his part, Kgosi Mwezi thanked Mabele residents for believing in him and electing him to lead them.

He said his vision was to attracting investors to the village, in the interest of creating employment opportunities.

Kgosi Mwezi assured residents that he would promote Veekuhane culture and safeguard it for future generations.

“I welcome this responsibility and promise to serve you wholeheartedly and ensure our village grows.”
