Africa-Press – Botswana. Khawa is a beehive of activity as preparations for the annual Khawa Dune Challenge and cultural festival slated for this weekend intensify.

Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture district coordinator for Tsabong and Hukuntsi, Rock Mphela, said in an interview that it was going to be a mind blowing festival with a bouquet of fun filled activities.

Mphela said four polka and four Namastaap groups as well as Kwena Madiba Cultural Group from Molepolole, who are experts of phatisi and national arts festival champions under the genre, would perform during the cultural night and contemporary music festival.

The groups, he said, were selected because of their performance during regional competitions.

He said the polka groups were selected because of their performance during the national arts festival while the Khawa Primary School polka group would perform as the hosts and as a way of grooming them while still young.

He said they have a new arts category of fashion show to support the fashion industry and designers, adding that models would parade outfits during the cultural night.

Regarding other activities, the district coordinator said different sporting bodies have been enlisted to administer their codes, adding that horse racing, motorsport, football and beach volleyball would be some of the codes competing.

The four football teams that would take part were constituency tournament included the defending champions Khawa 11, Blue Bulls from Struizendam, Orlando Stars from Kgalagadi South and Maake.

He said the games would start on Friday May 3 and that the winner would be crowned on Saturday May 4.

He said Botswana Horse Racing Association would help them administer the nine horse races, adding that they increased prizes for the winning horses and jockeys.

Mphela said one 800m Tswana breed race has been reserved for Khawa residents only to empower them.

Other races, he said, would be the 2 400m, 1 600m, 1 400m, 1 200m, 1 000m and 800m thorough breeds competition while Tswana horses would battle it out under 1 400m, 1 000m and 800m, adding that the total prize money amounted to P250 000.

Other activities include beach volleyball, 4X4 vehicle challenge, quad and camel rides.

He said Motorsport Botswana and Botswana Tourism Organisation would run bike stunts, quad bikes and motorbikes competitions.

He also said there would the usual stalls to celebrate the unique cultural aspects of the district.
