Africa-Press – Botswana. This year’s International Day of Forests (IDF) will be celebrated in Kisa on March 21.
Kgalagadi District Forest coordinator, Mr Tawana Maunganidze confirmed in an interview that this year’s commemoration would be held under a theme: Forests and Foods.
He said each year, various activities were done to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and trees for the benefit of current and future generations.
He said the day’s activities included tree-planting campaigns, among other things.
He said on the day, 60 trees would be planted in a half-hectare garden.
He said the community orchard would benefit all in the community, as it would bring food to people.
He said by planting trees, they would be contributing to global reforestation, repairing damaged ecosystem and mitigating climate change.
Also, he said, Kisa had an abundance of Grapple plant (Sengaparile) as the predominant non-timber product and most of the community members earned a living from its sales.
