Africa-Press – Botswana. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mr Noah Salakae says there are no plans to fence the Kokotsha-Tsabong Road.
Answering a question in Parliament on Monday, Mr Salakae said the road would be considered for future re-construction. He said the ministry would continue to occasionally undertake bush clearing and grass cutting along the road to mitigate against the hazard emanating from roaming animals and in addition, placing relevant signage intended to warn motorists of areas with increased animal movements.
Constructed in sections between the years 1985 and 1991, Mr Salakae said Kokotsha-Tsabong Road condition survey was done in 2022 as part of the national Road Condition Survey of Public Highway Network conducted by the Department of Roads. He said the ministry established that the road had severely deteriorated and that due to financial constraints, it was not included in the Second Transitional National Development Plan.
However, Mr Salakae said a comprehensive assessment of all roads providing market access for all key sectors including the Kokotsha-Tsabong Road would be made and key corridors prioritised. He said currently, the ministry’s intention was to modernise and transform all roads and undertake necessary maintenance interventions to ease the movement of traffic.
The minister was responding to a question from Kgalagadi North MP, Mr Reason Lekhutlane who had wanted to know when Kokotsha-Tsabong Road would be constructed including when the condition survey of the road was made. He also asked if the ministry had any intentions to carry out re-construction of the road given its current state and when the ministry intended to fence the road, as it was hazardous to motorists as a result of roaming animals.
