Africa-Press – Botswana. The German print fabric, referred to as leteisi in Setswana dominated the ramp during a fashion show hosted by Gaborone City Council (GCC) in collaboration with Limkokwing University of Creative Technology at Game City on Friday.
Designers infused the Setswana culture in their designs to show that leteisi was fashionable and versatile.
In an interview, Gaborone City Council public relations officer, Unity Mpapane said the fashion show featured 28 designers competing in three categories; fashion design, textile design and fashion accessories.
“The idea for this fashion week is to create a networking platform for designers, expose them to new fashion trends and to showcase their designs to the public,” said Mpapane.
She said the fashion show week held under the theme; Culture Fusion, saw winners in the competition walking away with monetary prizes, being one week training for accessory designing by Morongwa Stores, as well as being featured by GCC at the consumer fair to be held from August 28 to September 1.
“We held a seminar on Monday for the 28 designers to give them a hands on experience and help improve their skills, develop their creativity and getting them to better understand the industry,” added Mpapane.
For her part, fashion designer and prize winner under category of cushion design, Ms Tshokolo Modise said the event had exposed her to the market ever since she was taught sewing by GCC in 2021.
“I am a designer at Tsholofelo Community Hall. These events have been extremely beneficial to me as I had the opportunity to mingle with other designers and learn new skills and even learnt to make cushions in other styles,” noted Modise.
She advised Batswana designers to infuse into their clothing designs the cultural materials such as leteisi.
The fashion show week is an upgrade from the annual mini show.
