Lets Embrace Founding Principles- President

Africa-Press – Botswana. The State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) is a call to action that embodies the dreams and aspirations of the citizens and ignite a collective vision to open and reveal a whole new spectrum of possibilities and ambitions, President Advocate Duma Boko has said.

In his maiden SONA yesterday, President Boko said the nation should consider themselves a lucky generation, having had the privilege to witness a historic change of government following the rule of one party for nearly six decades.

He said the founding national principles of Democracy, Unity, Development, Self-reliance and Botho were not just ideals but essential pillars that had bound the nation together and thus set an agenda that would shape the socio-political landscape for years to come.

President Boko stated that by embracing the founding national principles, Batswana would work together to build a robust economy and a thriving society, reinforcing the fabric of the nation for future generations.

“That is the cornerstone of our change philosophy. We must embrace opportunities that lie ahead and address challenges with unity and a sense of purpose, as we work towards an inclusive and prosperous nation,” he said.

He stated that true progress was only achievable through a combination of community ideologies, and therefore urged the nation to work hand-in-hand to build a society where innovation flourished, education empowered and everyone had a seat at the table.

“We, together, will transform challenges into opportunities and dreams into reality,” he said.

President Boko noted the challenges facing the country which include economic uncertainty.

“Government is facing cash flow problems and the already high 27 per cent unemployment rate continues to worsen and the declining birthrate creates an existential threat to our future while diamonds continue to account for about 80 per cent of our foreign earnings and we have to wrestle with social and infrastructural issues. But we shall overcome,” President Boko said.

The situation, he said called for both immediate solutions to stabilise the economy and long-term reforms that would lay the foundation for sustainable growth since it was a journey that would require bold leadership, strategic action, and the unity of every Motswana.

President Boko noted that Batswana’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and maintaining peace and stability before, during and after the general elections process spoke volumes about a collective dedication to the future of the nation.

“This change is further made special by the manner in which it happened, including the smooth transfer of power.

For this, I must, on behalf of Batswana, thank my immediate predecessor, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi.

He accepted the people’s verdict. He gracefully passed on the baton. Indeed, he is a true statesman,” President Boko said.

This smooth transition, he said, marked a recasting and deepening of the contours of the country’s democratic vision.

President Boko emphasised his commitment to leading the nation towards a brighter future.
