Africa-Press – Botswana. Mabu First Born Project has made its mark in Chobe District this year, thanks to gifts from the South Africa High Commissioner to Botswana, Ms Thaninga Shope-Soumah.

The initiative, which aims to celebrate newborns, brought joy to the family of baby Quinton Gothusiwang, who was born on January 3.

Ms Shope-Soumah presented a collection of gifts, including food hampers, clothing, and toiletries to baby Quinton and his mother, Ms Temogano Gothusiwang, in Kasane on Friday. The Mabu

First Born Project was established during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to bring happiness to families during hard times.

“Since its inception in 2021, the project has focused on assisting mothers and their children by providing essentials such as groceries, toiletries, diapers, and clothing for up to three years of the child’s growth,” said Ms Shope-Soumah.

This year, the project has touched the lives of 34 households in the district, with contributions from the private sector aimed at creating a collective impact.

During the handover ceremony, Ms Shope-Soumah also extended her gratitude to the Chobe District Health Management Team (DHMT) for helping to identify the first baby of the year in the district.

She praised the community for their efforts in maintaining the beauty of Kasane, which is renowned for its tourism appeal.

“Kasane is a beautiful place filled with tourists, and I commend you for keeping it attractive by nurturing your biodiversity. Please continue to take care of your town,” she said.

Expressing appreciation, Ms Gothusiwang thanked the High Commissioner and sponsors for the donations, noting the significance of the gifts. “This gift is an expression of love, especially since my baby was not born on the first day of the year, but on January 3, making him the first baby of Chobe in 2024,” she said.

Chobe DHMT Coordinator, Ms Rose Munyere, echoed the sentiments, highlighting the importance of celebrating the arrival of new life.

“Bringing a baby into this world is a milestone worthy of celebration,” she said. Ms Munyere noted that initiatives, such as the Mabu project, served as motivation for them to foster a passion for their work.
