Africa-Press – Botswana. Debswana’s mining department employees and business partners have donated a smart STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) hub worth P780 000 to Makgadikgadi Junior Secondary School in Mosu.

The senior mining manager, Mr Pabalelo Nkhwalume, said the hub would enable Makgadikgadi JSS pupils to improve their engagement and familiarity with STEM.

Mr Nkhwalume said the intention was to improve academic results as well as empower and promote tech savvy pupils.

The donation included a porta cabin, 11 laptops and printer, state-of-the-art furniture, STEM learning kits, smart television set and kits games, internet connectivity, tablets and smart phones as well as cash amounting to P30 000.

Technology, Mr Nkhwalume said, could enhance pupils’ engagement, personalise learning to cater to individual pupils, provide immediate feedback, bridge the gap between pupils and teachers, especially in language learning and practice.

Debswana Strategy 2024, he said, had five pillars that intended to drive achievement of the company’s strategic objectives, adding that one of the pillars was Innovation and Digital Transformation meant to drive technological innovation as part of the organisation’s transformation journey.

For his part, the school head, Mr Nkarabang Nkarabang said the STEM hub would lay a strong foundation for a knowledge-based economy drive.

The donation, he said, would help them to produce globally competitive graduates.

“The handing over of STEM hub is a great milestone that we shall forever cherish,” Mr Nkarabang said.
