Africa-Press – Botswana. The 2023 Makgadikgadi spectacular has lived up to the expectations of both the divers, members of the public and revellers alike.

The 8th edition of the extravaganza that took place on Saturday was ‘Epic’ in the true sense of the word.

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, who graced the Saturday event in the otherwise usually quite Sowa Town, said even though the show had achieved great strides since inception in 2014, there still remained pockets of untapped potential that needed to be exploited.

He stated that the government, through the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, was working on a robust strategy, which would help turn the sector around; something he relayed was well within his administration’s strategy to diversify the economy.

“We have already started using some elements contained therein and it is part of the reason behind the successful hosting of the recent US-Africa Business Summit in Gaborone,” he said and promised that government would pull out all the stops in its quest to make Makgadikgadi Epic bigger and better going forward.

Value chains, according to Dr Masisi, was one of the suitable vehicles to employ to derive benefits that came along with the Makgadikgadi spectacular.

Moreover, Dr Masisi stated that Makgadikgadi epic was lush with a lot of beneficiation in such areas as transport, hospitality, parachutes and parachuting industry, retailing, camping and many others yet to be exploited.

“We are looking to motivate people to be creative and originate new services and new products,” he said.

A vanguard for mindset change, Dr Masisi said he would, starting next week, embark on a series of kgotla meetings with a view to tagging the nation along the need to change the mindset and do things differently and efficiently.

He thus challenged the young people to dream and be daring in their quest to better their lives.

President Masisi relayed that trade agreements such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), of which Botswana was part, presented young Batswana, especially those within the creative industry to stretch their imaginations beyond the confines of the Botswana borders and start to eke out sumptuous living from new frontiers.
