Africa-Press – Botswana. Geopolitical tensions, humanitarian crises, and the devastating effects of climate change have been recognized as critical global concerns.

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the just ended Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala, emphasised Botswana’s commitment to addressing the challenges through collective efforts.

He called for greater solidarity and a united coalition around peace, peace building, and said there was the need for global cooperation on climate change issues, including fulfilling promises of assistance and reparations from developed nations.

President Masisi reaffirmed Botswana’s adherence to the principles and ideals of NAM, expressing hope for positive outcomes due to the significant representation of world leaders at the summit

“We still stand as Botswana by the principles of NAM. We stand by our virtues as a member of the organisation. I expect from this NAM to get a better world because an overwhelming majority of world leaders are here,” he added.

Uganda’s President, General Yoweri Museveni, who assumed the rotating chairmanship of the summit, urged member states to define priorities favoring developing countries and leverage their collective strength to influence positions at platforms such as the United Nations.

He said the formation of NAM was a necessary anecdote to the irrational polarisation of the world between capitalist western countries and communist mainly eastern countries.

He said NAM advocated for concentration on common human problems, prosperity through trade, the advance of science and technology to deal with human problems, the environment, crime and terrorism

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President, Mr Dennis Francis, called on NAM members to use the NAM formula to accomplish global objectives and renewed demands for a humanitarian cease fire in Gaza.

“Negotiating a political solution is the best way forward and should demonstrate the fundamental right for peace. We support any initiative for that end,” he said.

The summit adopted the outcomes from the four-day deliberations by senior officials and ministers, indicating a commitment to addressing the pressing global issues.
