Africa-Press – Botswana. President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has described the late Mr Farayi Bonyongo as a hard worker and a dedicated member of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Speaking at the former North East District Council chairperson’s memorial service in Nlapkhwane on Friday, he praised the deceased for standing resolute with the BDP until his final day.

The President said the fact that the late councillor fell ill at a BDP regional meeting in Mosetse affirmed his dedication and love for the party.

“Mr Bonyongo loved the BDP wholeheartedly to the last day,” he said.

President Masisi said the deceased had contributed to the party’s success having groomed many leaders.

He thanked the Bonyongo family for allowing their father to pursue a career in politics and urged BDP members to protect the deceased’s legacy by uniting during the bye-election to ensure retention of the Nlapkhwane/Mapoka ward seat.

On behalf of the family, Mr Gilbert Bonyongo explained that his brother fell ill on February 1 during a BDP regional meeting and was admitted at Tutume Primary Hospital.

Sometime after being discharged, he complained of an intense headache and was taken to the local clinic where he was referred to Masunga Primary Hospital and finally to Nyangabwe Referral Hospital where he died.

BDP secretary general, Mr Kavis Kario said the party had lost a teacher and a coach in Mr Bonyongo.

“Let’s emulate him and be of good heart and character as he was,” he said.

MP for Tati West, Mr Simon Moabi described Mr Bonyongo as a powerhouse on which they relied.

He urged BDP members to nominate a strong candidate who would ensure the party retained the council seat.

North East District Council deputy chairperson, Mr Kudzani Tobokwani said the late chairperson believed in fairness and treated all councillors equally regardless of party affiliation.
