Africa-Press – Botswana. President Mokgweetsi Masisi has terminated the employment contract of suspended Director General of the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) Tymon Katlholo.
The contract was supposed to an end August this year.
While Katlholo confirmed the latest development on Friday, the Permanent Secretary to the President Emma Peloetletse claimed ignorance.
Responding to queries, Peloetletse requested that a text message be sent as “…I am chairing a meeting.”
Asked to confirm that Katlholo’s employment contract has been terminated and the reasons thereof, Peloetletse replied that: Why don’t you ask him.” After being informed that she was being given ‘the right of reply’ and pressed further; Peloetletse indicated that: “Although it’s a matter between an employer and an employee, I am not aware of this development.”
Katholo confirmed that his contract which was supposed to come to an end in August this year had been terminated. “Yes, I can confirm that my employment contract was terminated and I was only left with a few months to serve notice…,” he said. Katholo indicated that government had agreed to pay him the balance of his contract.
President Masisi in 2020 recalled Katholo from retirement and re-appointed him to lead the corruption busting agency, replacing Brigadier Joseph Mathambo who has been transferred to Botswana Defence Force (BDF).
Katlholo was suspended after dragging the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) to court. He indicated in court papers that the DCEC was investigating the Director General of DIS Peter Magosi and his juniors for corruption involving multi-million Pula government tenders. Katlholo’s suspension threw into the spotlight the issue of DCEC DG’s security of tenure and the independence of the corruption busting agency.
Asked what the status of investigation relating to Katlholo’s alleged misconduct was, Peloetletse said: “Now, this is a new question?”
When press put it to her that it was a follow to the questions that had been discussed earlier on, she said: “I haven’t discussed anything except to say I’m not aware to (sic) your report, Sir.”
