MASISI TO GRACE HIKA LA NGWANYANA CULTURAL EVENT

Africa-Press – Botswana. President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi is expected to grace the Hika la Ngwanyana Cultural Festival at Moshupa dam on saturday. The festival, the first of its kind in the country, is expected to attract local and international visitors and exhibitors. It intends to show case the rich cultural heritage of Bakgatla-ba-ga-Mmanaana.

Amidst lively festivities, attendees will have an opportunity to partake in cultural performances, traditional games, camping, boat rides, fishing amongst others. According to the folklore of the Moshupa dam, many years ago, a young girl, aged between 18 and 21, ventured to the dam to fetch water. Sitting upon a rock by the water’s edge, she mysteriously vanished into the depths, allegedly swallowed by a snake dwelling in the dam.

Though efforts were made to rescue her, tragically, she was found lifeless. After the tragedy, the rock was named Hika la Ngwanyana.The traditional belief of Bakgatla-ba-ga-Mmanaana is that one should point at the rock using an elbow not a finger.
