Africa-Press – Botswana. There was peace and jubilation as the people of Matsiloje in the North East welcomed the arrival of 2024 with fireworks and prayers.

The villageâ€TMs headman of records, Kgosi Solomon Segopa said in an interview that activities ranging from football tournaments, choirs and religious crossovers were held in the village and there was peace as the activities brought people together to celebrate.

He said the beginning of a new season was a time of reflection and introspection.

He said Matsiloje residents, just like other Batswana used the time to appreciate their success and reflect on failures of the previous year so that they could move forward into the new year with renewed hope.

However, the traditional leader decried illegal mining committed mostly by Zimbabweans who crossed the border unlawfully.

“Not only are they putting themselves in danger by crossing through dangerous terrain and facing armed security agents, they are also bringing weapons into the country and causing instability.

It is clear that the situation is out of control, and something must be done to address the root causes of this crisis,” he said.

Kgosi Segopa said illegal gold digging was not only dangerous but also detrimental to the economy and the environment.

“It is a complex problem that requires a multi-faceted solution,” he said.
