Africa-Press – Botswana. Murder and suicide have been described as demons that haunt the Botswana society.
Cases of murder and suicide are not on the rise in Francistown only, but across the country and globally too.
As such, Duma FM manager and Programmes officer, Tumisang Mothei calls for all to stand up for the eradication of the two social ills.
Mr Mothei made the call during Selepa Ward Development Committee (WDC) sponsored walk themed; Healthy Minds, a Great Walk to Success, geared towards fighting these vices in Francistown on July 29.
Mr Mothei advised people to ponder over their actions to avoid committing such crimes.
He challenged Batswana to be curious about the legacy they wanted to leave behind when they die.
Mothei advised men, the most notorious perpetrators of such occurrences to have mindset change, especially in relationships.
The Mayor of Francistown, Mr Godisang Radisigo said the country continued to lose productive lives through these suicide and murder case.
“Focus on your career because there is a bigger picture beyond the relationship,” he added.
Radisigo also advised those in deeper problems to seek counselling rather than killing their loved ones before committing suicide.
He said the first quarter of this year saw Francistown recording 1 232 cases, 33 of which were rape, 82 defilements whilst five were murder cases.
The Mayor said the most recurring contributory factor towards the commissioning of these cases was the use of drugs such as CAT.
He therefore implored parents to have a solid relationship with their children to end issues of murder, gender-based violence (GBV) and other vices.
A member of Selepa WDC, Mr Pako Khiwa said Francistown recently registered a high number of suicide and murder cases.
“The numbers keep increasing weekly due to mental related issues such as stress, depression, and anger,” she said.
She explained that the main objective of the walk was to raise awareness and impart knowledge on how to deal with mental health issues.
Reverend Kealeboga Toteng, who is also the Satellite North WDC secretary, said they decided to invite a radio personality because such people had the power to influence change and were also role models for young people.
