Africa-Press – Botswana. National Amalgamated Local, Central Government and Parastatal Workers Union also known as Manual Workers Union has today achieved a milestone in the just-ended salary negotiations.
After decades of struggling with low paid cadres at the salary scale of A3, the government has agreed to the demands of the union to elevate the salaries to a minimum of P2,500. The lowest-paid member of the union has been going home with a measly wage of about P1,500–P1,600.
In essence, the salary rise for about 4,280 manual workers means a salary rise of about 13.3%.
The union senior official and chief negotiator, Robert Rabasimane was elated that, “not only has the union met its target of a minimum wage of P2,500 for its members, but others have had an experience of about five percent wage rise across the scales.”
He indicated that the salary increase backdates to April 1.
Added the elated Rabasimane: “During the negotiations, we have agreed on everything. We don’t have an agreed–to–disagree thing. It was smooth.”
The recent strategy of the Manual Workers Union was to negotiate as a single entity from other public service sector trade unions and it has paid them dividends.
Manual Workers Union chief negotiator, Rabasimane is formerly a senior government officer at the level of senior assistant council secretary.
