Africa-Press – Botswana. Khoemacau Copper Mine management has been implored to undertake meaningful projects through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to assist communities in their area of operation.

Speaking during her visit to the mine recently, the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Bogolo Kenewendo said the Khoemacau mine should do away with minor CSR projects but do sustainable projects in areas such as agriculture. Ms Kenewendo said Khoemacau mine, which was set for expansion should be beneficial to the communities and to the country as a whole.

She said Botswana wanted to realise diversification and value addition in base metals such as copper. She also said that the ministry was concerned by the safety of mine workers and therefore mines should strive for zero accidents.

In his remarks, Kgosi Leretetse Mogalakwe of the Batawana Tribal Administration said Khoemacau mine should leave a strong legacy behind which could be achieved by major projects such as schools, hospitals and a strong economy in Toteng.

Kgosi Mogalakwe said that Khoemacau mine was established in a place with historical significance to Batawana therefore should contribute immensely to the people.

Khoemacau mine General Manager, Mr Logic Sebopeng said that the mining company was positive that the planned mine expansion would create more job opportunities for the locals. Mr Sebopeng said Copper was still in high demand in the global market therefore the future for Copper mining was promising for the country.
