Ministry endorses Gaborone International Health Expo

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) has commended Amble Promotions and Kalafhi Medical Center for their efforts in initiating the Gaborone International Health Expo (GIHE).

The Expo aims to bring together local and international players in the health and wellness industry under one roof to network and market their products and services, and importantly to highlight the advancement of new innovations and technologies to improve health care. The Expo also aims to contribute to health care delivery in Botswana and position the country as the preferred destination for medical tourism.

The second instalment of the Gaborone International Health Expo is scheduled for 22 – 24 June, 2023 in Gaborone, Botswana under the theme “The future is health”. The 2023 Edition promises to be bigger and better. Scheduled to last for three days, the main expo centre is proposed for Ditshupo Hall where exhibitors from across the world will showcase their products and services. Boipuso Hall will host side events while activations will be held around Gaborone. This approach will ensure that no one is left behind. The side events will include an official opening ceremony, health talks and panel discussions and closing ceremonies.

“We therefore endorse their efforts, and look forward to the successful completion of the exercise, and contribution to Botswana’s general healthcare system,” said Samuel Kolane on behalf of the MoHW Permanent Secretary.

For her part, Kalafhi Marketing Manager Michelle Wright said GIHE is an initiative by Amble Promotions (Pty) Ltd and Kalafhi Medical Center. Wright said the first instalment of the expo took place in November 2019 under the theme “Embracing the 4th Industrial Revolution to advance healthcare in Botswana” where over 1,200 people passed through the Expo Village at the Gaborone Main Mall.

In an effort to reach more people, a more intimate Expo was held on 28–29 May 2022 in Tlokweng under the theme “Know Your Health”, which was officiated by the Minister of Communications, Knowledge and Technology and Member of Parliament for Tlokweng Hon. Thulagano Segokgo.

The mini expo attracted exhibitors in the healthcare space and hundreds of residents who came in for free health screenings. “The idea behind the expo is to embrace Botswana Government’s pronouncement to make Botswana the preferred destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Expose’ (MICE). As a truly international Expo based in Botswana, our objectives have been to: Create a health hub where all stakeholders in the health and related sectors come together under one roof to showcase, network and interact with consumers of health products and services; assert Botswana’s ambition of becoming a health tourism destination of choice; conscientise citizens about the importance of health and provide valuable information of where to get healthcare services and how to become or work towards living a healthier lifestyle,” Wright explained.

She added that the expo will also stimulate conversation on the health sector by sharing information on the latest medical innovations and technologies, readiness for future global pandemics.

Over the years, the healthcare industry has experienced significant growth and changes, she explained.

However, Covid19 pandemic has revealed some of the challenges and vulnerabilities the healthcare systems have with regards to access, capacity, quality, innovation, and workforce issues. Traditional practices of the industry are dissolving and new, innovative roles and techniques are emerging.

“As a collective, we can explore what the future of health could look like and fundamentally transform the existing health system with new business models, emerging technologies and highly engaged consumers.”

The GIHE aims to create a health hub where all stakeholders in the health and related industries from around the world come together to examine these issues, share information on the latest medical innovations and technologies and make

Botswana the health tourism destination of choice. Medical tourism is growing exponentially, and Botswana is at the heart of the Southern African region with access to various markets of over 200 million people. With a good stable economy, Botswana presents herself as the door for health care. Amble Promotions and Kalafhi Medical Center are committed to the wellbeing of Botswana citizens and working towards building a healthier Botswana. The promoters of the GIHE wish to announce that opportunities exist for Botswana based and international companies in the health and wellness field as well as related areas such as medical aid schemes, health practitioners, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, health training institutions, health product distributors, medical laboratories and others to participate in the GIHE as exhibitors and partners.
