Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) has officially launched a state-of-the-art Traffic Management Centre and associated facilities for Greater Gaborone. The historic centre was delivered through the New Traffic Signalling Modernization and Provision of Centralized Traffic Control Project, part of the broader Urban Roads Improvement initiatives under the Botswana Integrated Transport Project (BITP). This milestone highlights the government’s commitment to modernising urban transport infrastructure and enhancing road safety across rapidly growing cities.
The main objective of the initiative is to create a safe, comfortable, inclusive and modern transport system. The project addresses the challenges posed by increasing vehicle numbers in urban areas, requiring more effective traffic management measures. It forms part of the government’s broader strategy to develop adequate infrastructure and road signage nationwide, with a focus on urban centres where congestion and road accidents have become pressing issues. The Traffic Management Centre combines advanced technology with centralized control to ensure smooth traffic flow and timely emergency responses.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Noah S.L.M. Salakae, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, emphasised the strategic importance of the project. He stated that with the launch of this Traffic Management System, the government reaffirms that the development of the land transport sector is a strategic priority, as outlined in the Botswana Employment, Transport and Policy (BETP) and the National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12). Minister Salakae highlighted that the centre is designed to improve traffic monitoring, manage congestion, and enhance safety for all road users.
The Traffic Management Centre features an integrated system of traffic signals, CCTV cameras, and automatic incident detection mechanisms. These technologies enable real-time monitoring of traffic conditions, remote control of traffic signals, and faster emergency response coordination. The system will also support the work of law enforcement, emergency services and transport authorities, ensuring that urban mobility in Greater Gaborone is efficient and safe.
This initiative forms part of a long-term vision to modernise Botswana’s urban transport networks. By investing in technology-driven traffic management and infrastructure improvements, the government aims to provide residents with a safer, more reliable and accessible transportation system. The Traffic Management Centre stands as a landmark project demonstrating Botswana’s commitment to sustainable urban development and road safety.
