The NHI is a key initiative by the Ministry aimed at improving access to affordable and high-quality healthcare services for all Batswana. The meeting marked another step in ensuring that the voices of workers are heard in shaping the country’s future healthcare system.

Permanent Secretary Professor Oatlhokwa Nkomazana and Senior Consultant for the NHI, Ms. Lydia Andries, led the discussions. They explained that the main objective of the engagement was to collect input and perspectives from unions on how they envisioned the structure and operation of the NHI.

Prof. Nkomazana noted that collaboration with key stakeholders was essential to designing a system that meets the needs of every Motswana. She emphasized that the NHI aims to ensure that no citizen is denied healthcare due to financial barriers.

Ms. Andries highlighted that the Ministry values open dialogue and seeks to build a model that reflects the collective aspirations of the nation. “We want the NHI to be inclusive, equitable, and sustainable. That starts with listening to stakeholders like the trade unions who represent thousands of workers,” she said.

The trade union representatives expressed appreciation for being involved early in the process. They requested time to engage their members before providing a consolidated position on the NHI framework. The Ministry welcomed this request and assured them of continued engagement throughout the consultation process.

The meeting demonstrated the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity in policy development. Through such stakeholder engagements, the NHI team aims to create a national health system that delivers better care, reduces inequality, and strengthens Botswana’s healthcare infrastructure for generations to come.
