Africa-Press – Botswana. Although no Cholera cases have been reported in Botswana, the Ministry of Health is on alert.

There have been reports of cholera cases in South Africa with reports of some deaths suspected to have been caused by the disease.

In an interview with BOPA on Monday, the ministry spokesperson, Dr Christopher Nyanga, said the ministry had already prepared its districts to be able to detect and manage cases in the event the country recorded any.

Meanwhile, Dr Nyanga advised the public to maintain high standards of hygiene, adding that they should always wash their hands with clean water and soap, before handling food and after using the toilet as well as to seek care at the nearest health facility if they fall sick.

Moreover, he explained that currently the cholera vaccine was not given routinely, but the ministry had adequate skills, structures and mechanisms in place to contain the disease should it come to Botswana.

He encouraged Batswana who travelled to South Africa to maintain good hygiene practices and present to their health facilities, if they experienced any symptoms.
