Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport, and Culture has revealed to Members of Parliament that from the year 2019, it spent P2, 809, 053 on performing artists during national events such as President’s Day Competitions, National Arts Festivals, Independence Day Celebrations and National Culture Day.

Responding to a question in Parliament, Minister Tumiso Rakgare said the ministry spent the amount on payment of the 625 artists that were engaged from that year. Rakgare was then asked by a Member of Parliament for Kanye North, Thapelo Letsholo on what criterion is used to select performing artists to perform at the national events. The Minister stated that they consider quite several things before the artists are chosen to go perform at the national events. “The type and nature of the event determines the type of performances required; the theme of the event and the script produced,” he said.

He said they can make a selection based on the unique offering of the artist as some events are of high profile and they do require seasoned artists with a certain technique and style that matches and advertises the brands of organisations. According to the minister, the time required to deliver the event also plays a pivotal role in the selection of artists. “In some instances the duration of the event may be limited in scope and thus determine the performance to save time and also to avoid extra logistical costs that can be incurred, especially if the group is coming from far,” he said.
